Effort to redraw congressional map fails in Indiana Senate

An effort to redraw Indiana’s congressional maps has failed.

The Indiana Senate voted 31 to 19 against House Bill 1032 on Thursday. The 10 Democrats in the Indiana Senate voted against the measure, plus 21 Indiana Senate Republicans. Legislation to redistrict cannot be proposed again until after the regular legislative session ends- which is expected sometime in March of 2026.

The failed redistricting bid came after President Trump and Vice President JD Vance encouraged Indiana lawmakers to redraw the state’s maps ahead of next year’s midterm elections. The goal was to make a map to turn all of nine of Indiana’s congressional seats into safe races for Republican candidates. The state is currently represented by  Republicans and two Democrats in the U.S. House.

The president and governor have threatened to field MAGA challengers against Republicans who voted against the redistricting plan yesterday.

In our area, Sen. Greg Walker, a Columbus Republican, and Sen. Jean Leising, a Republican from Oldenburg, voted against the proposal, while Sen. Eric Koch, a Bedford Republican, and Sen. Randy Maxwell, a Republican from Guildford, voted for it.
