Seymour mayor looks back on 2025 in State of the City

Seymour Mayor Matt Nicholson presented his seventh state of the city address at Monday night’s Seymour City Council meeting.

Among the highlights for 2025, Nicholson said that the Jackson County Industrial Development Corp. tracked $223.7 million in promised investment in Seymour. He touted the improvements on Community Drive and Second Street and the creation of Henry Way in the eastside industrial park.

The mayor touched on the tragic death of 4-year-old Maverick Lee Flinn in a farming accident. He was the son of Seymour firefighter Mitchell Flinn and the grandson of Lt. Craig Flinn. The Seymour Fire Department named its newest truck, Ladder 3, in Maverick’s honor.

Nicholson also reflected on the achievements of the police department, including their response to the shooting at the Jackson County Public Library last year. He said officers were on the scene in just over one minute. Nicholson praised library patron Andrew Jackson who was able to subdue the suspect and wrestle him to the ground as police arrived. The Indiana State Fraternal of Police presented Jackson with a citizen’s assisting law enforcement award.

Nicholson also praised Officer Dakota Burke who was off duty when a neighbor’s child reported that their father had collapsed. Officer Burke was able to provide medical assistance until medics arrived that saved the neighbor’s life.

Looking forward, Nicholson said the city will need to make upgrades to the police station and dispatch center in the next year. Nicholson also looked forward to major renovations at the Shield Park pool and the continuation of the O’Brien Street improvements.
