Flooding possible as heavy rain continues across area

With today’s heavy rain, area rivers and streams are filling again and heading toward minor flood levels.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says that we received up to an inch and a half of rain already and up to another inch is expected. That is leading to areal flooding due to runoff in low-lying or flood prone areas. An areal flood warning is in effect until 7 p.m. tonight for an area including Brown County. An areal flood advisory is in effect for Bartholomew, Decatur, Johnson and Shelby counties until 7:30 p.m.

A flood warning has been issued for East Fork White River at Seymour, with the river expected to rise above the minor flood stage late tomorrow morning and rise to a crest of 14.1 feet early on Saturday morning in the minor flood stage.

That flood warning is in effect until Monday morning.

Driftwood River near Edinburgh is also expected to return to flood levels, although just barely. River gauge forecasts show the river heading back up soon and cresting at a tenth of a foot above the 11 foot minor flood stage by Friday afternoon.

A wind advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. tonight in southeastern Indiana, for areas south of Jackson and Jennings County. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected.
