Local historian receives Daughters of the American Revolution honor

The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently recognized educator, historian and community leader Paulette Roberts with the chapter’s “Women in American History” award.

The award recognizes notable women past and present for outstanding contributions to their communities.

Roberts taught middle school for over 30 years in the Bartholomew County school system retiring in 2004. She then founded the Columbus Enrichment Achievement Program offering free tutoring for students each Saturday. She has been involved in many area history projects including curating black history exhibits, portraying historic figures such as Harriet Tubman and establishing the Black Heritage Trail. The trail, launched last year, provides plaques in downtown Columbus highlighting 10 places important to local black history.

Roberts was awarded a medal and certificate at the Joseph Hart Chapter’s meeting earlier this month. At the ceremony, Roberts said that she is proud to support the Daughters of the American Revolution mission of patriotism, education and historic preservation.
