SafeZone enforcement to start Wednesday on I-74 in Shelby, Decatur

Starting Wednesday, Indiana state officials will be using a new automated traffic monitoring system to crack down on dangerous drivers in the Interstate 74 work zone in Decatur and Shelby counties.

This is part of a new Safe Zone pilot program going on at four locations in the state. In a Safe Zone, timing devices monitor vehicle speeds as they pass through work zones. Signs are posted to notify drivers entering and exiting active worksites that speeds are being monitored.

If you are caught driving more than 11 mph above the posted speed limit, the system captures an image of your vehicle’s rear license plate. A citation will be issued to the owner of the vehicle by mail.

The first violation is a warning, then a $75 fine for second violations, and a $150 fine for third and subsequent violations.
