More study reveals longer track for Cortland tornado

After taking another look at tornado damage in Jackson County, the National Weather Service has extended its assessment of how long the Cortland tornado was on the ground.

The Cortland area was hit by an EF-1 tornado during Monday night’s bad weather, according to meteorologists. Trees were snapped off about 15 to 20 feet above the ground, power poles were knocked down and the tornado caused substantial damages to barns and at least one home. No one was injured. Wind speeds reached 105 mph and was up to 100 yards wide.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis originally said that the tornado traveled about 2.2 miles over about three minutes, but yesterday revised that assessment. They now say that the tornado traveled 3.7 miles and was active from 4:44 to 4:49 in the afternoon, or five minute. The revised path means the tornado almost reached the Bartholomew/Jackson County line.
