Forecasters upgrade chances of severe weather; Flood watch going into effect

Our area has been upgraded in the risk for severe weather tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, we are now under an enhanced risk of severe weather tonight. The greatest danger in our area will be straight line winds that could reach gusts of up to 70 mph. Hail, excessive rain and flooding and tornadoes are all also possible.

The first round of bad weather is expected to finish by 5 p.m., with a second and worse round blowing through between 7 p.m. tonight and 2 a.m. Thursday morning.

Emergency officials suggest that you secure loose outdoor items to keep them from blowing around. You should also charge your cell phones and electronic devices in case of power outages.

A flood watch goes into effect for our area starting at 5 today as flooding caused by excessive rain is possible.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says that one to two inches of rain is expected throughout Central Indiana with up to four inches of rain possible in some places. You could see the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

The flood watch is in effect until late tonight.
