MEMORIES OF MARTY
This week i was saddened to learn that one of my top 5 favorite sportscasters of all time, Marty Brennaman, was calling it quits after the 2019 season. There has never been a stronger presence for one team on a radio broadcast as Marty. I’ve been a fan of the Cincinnati Reds since they moved from Crosley Field to Riverfront Stadium in 1970. Marty began in 1974. When the Reds were on radio, good or bad, I tuned in to hear him call a game. Never holding back on his feelings for the team, he called a game like I imagined I would…with passion and conviction. When he and Joe Nuxhall teamed together there was no finer baseball broadcast team around. So after this year, there will be two radio broadcasters still on air whose voice makes a game “must listen” in my opinion…IU’s Don Fischer and our own broadcasting legend, Sam Simmermaker. I will tune in as much as possible to hopefully hear Marty say “this one belongs to the reds” a lot in his final season….and, Marty, you’ll always belong to Reds fans everywhere!
