Jackson County hosting Fort Vallonia Days this weekend

Fort Vallonia Days are returning to Jackson County this weekend.

Events will kick off Friday evening and run through 4 on Sunday.

This is the 56th year for the festival, which celebrates the history of the fort in south central Jackson County. General William Henry Harrison, the Governor of Indiana, ordered a fort built in 1811 to protect families in the area. In 1969 a local group built a recreation of the original fort and launched the annual pioneer festival. The event is an annual fundraiser that supports the upkeep of the Fort and its grounds along with a museum at the site.

Events at the  festival start Friday night with a pumpkin decorating contest and live music. Activities get underway again at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday morning and include music and activities such as muzzle loading rifle shoots, tomahawk and knife throwing, western dancing, cornhole and horseshoe tournaments and a cowboy posse reenactment.
