Vehicle stuck on railroad tracks; Driver arrested

A car became stuck on railroad tracks in North Vernon the day after Christmas and the driver is being accused of driving under the influence.

According to the North Vernon Police Department, officers were called to the railroad tracks at East O and M Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. on December 26th and found a car that had tried to cross the tracks at an angle and was stuck. Inside the vehicle, police discovered several open containers of alcoholic beverages.

Witnesses and the police investigation determined that Jerry Doty was the driver of the vehicle and he was showing signs of impairment including slurred speech, watery eyes and the smell of alcohol on his breath. He refused a test at the scene ad was taken to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital to have his blood drawn.

He was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Jennings County dispatchers contacted CSX Railroad to ensure that the tracks were secured. Pearson’s Wrecker Service was called to the scene and the car was removed before any train traffic arrives.
