Red Cross offering home heating safety tips

The Indiana branch of the American Red Cross is offering home heating safety tips.

According to the agency, if you have to use a space heater, you should never leave it unattended. You should place it on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, such as a ceramic tile floor. You should never put a space heater on a rug or carpet, or near bedding and drapes. And you should always plug a space heater directly into a wall outlet, never plugged into a power strip or extension cord.

You should make sure a space heater is turned off whenever you leave the room and never leave one running while sleeping.

They also say that you should keep children, pets and anything that can burn at least three feet away from any heating equipment.
