Federal prosecutor appointed for southern Indiana district

The southern district of Indiana officially has a new U.S. attorney.

The U.S. attorney serves as the chief federal law enforcement officer in the district. According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Thomas E. Wheeler II was officially sworn in recently after having his nomination to the role approved by the U.S. Senate.

Wheeler’s interim appointment was first announced last July. At the time, Wheeler was serving as Acting General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Education. He has also served as acting assistant attorney general for civil rights at the Department of Justice and senior advisor to the White House School Safety Commission. Previously,  he was a partner at Bose McKinney & Evans LLP law firm in Indianapolis. He holds a bachelors of science degree from Indiana University and graduated from Indiana University Maurer School of Law.

The southern district of Indiana office has 45 Assistant United States Attorneys and 32 support professionals responsible for criminal prosecutions, civil litigation, and public safety efforts in about two thirds of the state of Indiana.

The ceremony was held last week at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis.
