Bartholomew deputies’ blue envelope program to aid communications

A new program being put into place in Bartholomew County is meant to help those on the autism spectrum or who have other intellectual, communication or developmental disabilities interact with law enforcement and other first responders.

Called the Blue Envelope Program, participants will be able to receive a distinctive blue envelope that is meant to store important documents such as those needed during a traffic stop. Documents could include a copy of a driver’s license, insurance card and vehicle registration. It will also include notes on the participant’s situation and offer guidance to police and emergency contact details.

The blue color will serve as a visual indicator to police that the person might have communication or sensory issues.

The program is a partnership between the sheriff’s department and the Arc of Bartholomew County.

Organizers say the program’s goals are to strengthen community trust, to enhance law enforcement awareness, and to ensure informed interactions with all residents.

The envelopes will be available starting in May at the sheriff’s department or at the Arc of Bartholomew County. You can contact either agency for more information.
