Flood warnings in low-lying areas after up to 5 inches of rain

Flood warnings are in effect for parts of our area after last night’s storms dumped as much as five inches of rain in some spots.

A flood warning due to the excessive rainfall is in effect in western Jackson County, which saw some of the heaviest rain of the night according to the National Weather Service. Minor flooding is ongoing in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Some low-water crossings may be impassable.

That flood warning also includes, Lawrence, Daviess, Knox and Martin counties and is in effect until 9 a.m. A flood advisory is in effect for Brown County, also until 9 this morning.

East Fork White River at Seymour is expected to rise to minor flooding later this morning. It is expected to crest at about two and a half feet above the minor flood stage by early Friday morning. The Muscatatuck River at Vernon is also expected to reach the minor flood stage later this morning.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected again this evening with a 90 percent chance of rain. Another quarter to half an inch of rain is possible.

Emergency officials urge you to turn around and don’t drown if you come across a flooded roadway. Must flood deaths occur in vehicles.
