Interstate 65 chase leads to multi-vehicle crash near Greenwood

A police chase that started Saturday morning in Bartholomew County led to a serious crash that critically injured several people near Greenwood.

According to the Indiana State Police, a trooper noticed a vehicle speeding near the Edinburgh exit on northbound Interstate 65 that had a false license plate. When the trooper tried to make a traffic stop, instead of stopping, the driver sped away from the officer.

The driver was near Greenwood when she tried to pass traffic on the shoulder, but hit another vehicle, causing a chair reaction crash that involved four people.

Troopers found one of the victims was in critical condition and applied several tourniquets to stabilize her before she was taken to a local hospital. That person was last reported to be in critical but stable condition. Five other people were taken to area hospitals with non life threatening injuries.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle, 25-year-old Nicole Bryant of Indianapolis was taken into custody and then transported to a hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The northbound lanes of the interstate were closed for several hours while the accident was investigated and cleaned up.

Other agencies assisting in the pursuit and investigation included the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Greenwood Police Department, Greenwood Fire Department and INDOT.
