Friends and supporters remember Garton’s quiet style to aid Columbus

Former long-time Columbus legislator Bob Garton passed away on Friday at the age of 92.

Garton represented Columbus in the Indiana State Senate District 41 for 36 years, during which time he was Republican Caucus Chair for four years and President Pro Tempore, the top Senate leadership position in the state, for 26 years.

Friends remember him as a person who moved quietly behind the scenes to make things happen for Columbus, Bartholomew County and the rest of the district.

Lynn Lucas ran several of Garton’s political campaigns, including a run for governor. She recalls his speaking skills, honed as a Toastmaster.

Former Columbus Mayor Fred Armstrong remembers Garton’s support his adopted hometown, frequently behind the scenes.

After leaving the legislature in 2006, he took on a role as vice president of professional development at Ivy Tech.

Garton and his wife Barb have been married for 71 years and have two children Brad and Brenda.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to America’s Vet Dogs at vetdogs.org. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
