Disabled vets could see changes to property tax bills

Disabled veteran homeowners could be affected by changes to Indiana property tax deductions that go into effect July 1st.

According to the Bartholomew County Auditor’s Office, the former Disabled Veteran Property Tax Deduction has been replaced with a Disabled Veteran Property Tax Credit. Because of the change, some veterans who did not previously qualify because of their home’s assessed value, may now be eligible for a tax break.

Veterans who currently receive the Tax Deduction do not need to reapply or take any action to receive the tax credit. Existing recipients will automatically transition to the new credit program.

Although the new changes take effect on July 1st, they will not apply to this year’s taxes and will instead apply to 2027 tax bills. Veterans who might be eligible are urged to stop by the auditors office between July 1st and the end of the year.
