Columbus police investigating Friday shooting hoax call

Columbus police are investigating what they are calling a swatting incident Friday night.

According to Columbus Police Department, officers were called to a home in the 300 block of Sunset Drive at about 9:36 p.m. Friday night after a caller reported a shooting and possible hostage situation. Officers blockaded the area and began investigating the situation and tried to determine whether an actual threat existed.

Police made contact with the homeowner, who was alone in the residence and unharmed. No evidence of a hostage situation, shooting or any danger was found and it was determined that the entire reported incident was fake.

Authorities say that the Columbus Police Department takes swatting incidents seriously and will not tolerate conduct that puts residents, first responders, and the community at risk.

“Swatting” refers to dangerous prank calls to authorities made under the false pretense that a violent crime is happening. The caller’s goal is to provoke a potentially dangerous situation between unknowing residents and armed officers, sometimes involving a SWAT team. It also draws officers away from other areas of the community while they are dealing with the hoax.
