Columbus firefighters relocated due to station problems

The Columbus Fire Department is relocating firefighters from its Station 5 on Goeller Court to protect their health as moisture problems continue in the building and their living quarters.

According to the fire department, the 40 year old building has had continual moisture problems that have led to water-stained ceiling tiles, peeling paint, and window condensation. Efforts to improve the situation have included a new HVAC system and several roof and window repairs.

The city’s facilities department has been working closely with the Fire Department to find the source of the excessive moisture and the impact on the structure. The city will be having a comprehensive evaluation from a professional remediation specialist to determine the full extent of the problem and identify necessary corrective measures.

Until the problems are identified and addressed, the Station 5 personnel have been reassigned to Fire Station 6 which is on Southern Crossing or County Road 450S.

Chief Andy Lay released a statement saying one of his greatest responsibilities is to protect the health and safety of department personnel. He said the city wants “to ensure the moisture issues are fully addressed before the station is reoccupied.”
