Shelby authorities detail end of Edinburgh mall chase

Authorities in Shelby County are releasing more information about a police chase that started at the Indiana Premium Outlet mall in Edinburgh Wednesday, after a store worker was struck by a van in the parking lot.

According to Edinburgh Police Department, officers were called to the mall Wednesday after a store employee was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot. Two vans fled the scene.

Shelbyville police say that an officer was on State Road 44 at about 3:30 p.m. in the afternoon when he pulled behind the vehicles near Interstate 65. Both vehicle raced away and drove recklessly, passing vehicles on the right shoulder and crossing double yellow lines to pass more vehicles at speeds of more than 100 mph. Officers from the Shelbyville police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department also joined the pursuit.

A police officer and an uninvolved vehicle crashed near West McKay Road and Theobald Street, sending both vehicles into a yard. The officer and the driver both suffered minor injuries.

One of the suspect vehicles lost control just west of Shelbyville, crashing into two other vehicles and a FedEx semi. The occupants of the suspect vehicle, an adult and two juveniles, were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious.

The second suspect vehicle continued east through Shelbyville before traveling into Decatur County. That chase ended with a crash on eastbound Interstate 74 and the occupants were taken into custody by Shelby County deputies.

A woman and a 17 year old male from Ohio were arrested for the thefts in Edinburgh. Additional charges are being sought for the injuries to the store worker as well as charges against more theft suspects.
