Another arrest made in investigation of shooting of former Greensburg officer

Evansville authorities say that they have arrested another person in connection with a weekend shooting of a former Greensburg police officer.

Officer Samuel Taylor was shot along with a suspect early Sunday morning when police encountered a stolen vehicle at a fast food restaurant. Taylor was seriously injured in the shooting. Taylor served with the Greensburg Police Department from 2023 to 2024. He was still in the Evansville department’s training period and the suspect was shot by Taylor’s field training officer.

The shooting suspect, 18-year-old Jailani Chew was released from the hospital and is facing charges including attempted Murder, Robbery, resisting Police and Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon.

Police say that they have arrested the man who provided Chew with the gun in the incident. Evansville police worked with the Crime Gun Intelligence Center to track the serial number of the weapon, which was bought earlier in the month by 25-year-old Maurice Cobb Jr. of Evansville. Police say that Cobb was under felony indictment in Perry County for child neglect charges, but falsely filled out the firearm paperwork saying he was not facing felony charges. That violated state and federal firearms laws. A search of his home uncovered more firearms, along with ammunition, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

He is being charged with making a false statement on a firearms consent form and unlawful carrying of a handgun as well as for dealing in marijuana and for possessing drug paraphernalia.

Taylor was last reported to be in stable condition, but in danger of using the use of his lower extremities.
