Code Enforcement Officer Fred Barnett Retires
After 12 years of dedicated, colorful, and impactful service to the city of Columbus, legendary Code Enforcement Officer Fred Barnett has retired.
Known just as much for his unmistakable Southern drawl as he is for his ability to turn a short story into a long story, he’s also known for his relentless work ethic and unshakeable integrity. Barnett has been a staple of the community, steering his code enforcement through every corner of the city to keep Columbus safe, clean, and thriving.
During his dozen years of service, Barnett took on some of the city’s most challenging and sensitive community issues. His daily responsibilities spanned a massive spectrum, including:
- Addressing complex homeless encampments with compassion and order.
- Managing things from property maintenance issues to severe hoarding situations.
- Enforcing city ordinances regarding urban agriculture, which occasionally meant addressing broods of backyard chickens and roosters.
While the job description required enforcing the city ordinances, Barnett’s approach was defined by his unique ability to meet people exactly where they were. He excelled at establishing a quick rapport with residents, turning potentially tense confrontations into constructive conversations.
Beyond his service to Columbus, Barnett is a man of diverse passions. He holds black belts in both Judo and Jujitsu. He noted that his martial arts training undoubtedly contributed to his calm and confident demeanor on the job.
He is also an avid, lifelong weightlifter. Showing no signs of slowing down, Barnett pushed his physical limits by lifting nearly a million more pounds in 2026 than in the previous year.
When he isn’t lifting weights, practicing martial arts, or patrolling the city, Barnett is a dedicated animal lover with a soft spot for horses, dogs and cats.
The City of Columbus extends its deepest gratitude to Fred Barnett for his 12 years of unwavering commitment, grit, and unique flair. His presence on the streets and his dedication to the community will be deeply missed, and the city wishes him the absolute best in his well-deserved retirement.
