Columbus animal shelter seeking donations toward new facility

Columbus Animal Care Services is asking you to help build a new shelter for the city.

According to the city-operated shelter, The Paws and Purpose fundraising effort hopes to generate $1 million in donations. That will be used to match a $1 million donation from Mark and Wendy Elwood. The effort is being organized by Friends of Columbus Animal Care Services, the non-profit partner of the city-operated animal shelter.

The current facility was build in 1987 to house 22 dogs and 40 cats, but it now routinely holds twice that amount. Organizers say that the current building also has costly maintenance issues coming up.

The new facility will be built to shelter 66 dogs and 86 cats. There will also be larger reception and medical intake areas, more office space and meet and greet rooms for the pets.
