Columbus bus routes changing Monday; No buses on Saturday

The first major changes in years are coming to Columbus bus routes starting on Monday.

As part of the preparation, city buses will not be running Saturday as crews switch signage and make other changes ahead of a new color-coded loop system.

The new route system will be launching on Monday including new bus routes and schedules, more crossover points where you can switch buses, the changing of the traditional numbered routes to a set of color-coded names and loops and a new app to plan your route.

The new loops will replace the existing five bus routes that run hourly, with four loops that will run more regularly. Those will be called the Blue, Green, Orange & Purple loops which are fixed routes. To achieve greater efficiency, among the changes, a rider will no longer be able to flag down a bus anywhere along its route. Instead, riders will have to wait at designated bus stops.

The city has launched a new transit app that you can download to your phone which will help you plan your route and find bus stops near you.

Future changes will include a new ride-share style program and the rolling out of regular routes to Walesboro and the Taylorsville/Edinburgh areas.

The Taylorsville expansion will begin on April 6th also serving Heritage Heights, Harvest Meadows, Colony Park and Edinburgh Premium Outlets. There will also be more stops and pickups available, but you will have to call in advance to schedule what officials are calling a deviated route.
