Columbus man convicted of shooting at ex-wife

A Columbus man was convicted last week of attempted murder after firing shots at his ex-wife in 2024.

According to the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office, 60-year-old Brent Clayburn was found guilty last week of attempted murder and criminal confinement with a deadly weapon after a four day jury trial.

The arrest came after a September 2024 incident when police were called to a report of shots being fired at a home on Silver Fox Drive. At the time, police said there was a domestic dispute between a Clayburn and his ex-wife. She ran from the home and police say that Clayburn fired shots from a handgun. She reached a neighbor’s home and called for authorities.

Police discovered multiple bullets that had hit the neighbor’s home.

Clayburn initially barricaded himself inside the home and refused to come out, but surrendered about two hours after the SWAT team was called to the scene.

The jury deliberated for just over three hours before returning guilty verdicts on both counts. The case was presented by Prosecutor Lindsey Holden, Chief Deputy Prosecutor Kim Sexton-Yeager, and Deputy Prosecutor Mat Taylor.
