Columbus police offer reminder on fireworks hours

With the Fourth of July approaching, Columbus police are reminding residents of city ordinances on when they are allowed to set off fireworks.

According to the Columbus Police Department, city ordinances allow fireworks to be set off between 5 and 11 p.m. at night today through Friday and again from Sunday through July 9th. On the Fourth of July, fireworks can be set off in the city from 10 in the morning to midnight.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is offering safety tips for those setting off fireworks.

Emergency officials say that you should never smoke or consume alcohol when lighting fireworks. You should give room to those setting off fireworks because they can backfire or shoot off in the wrong direction.

You should not attempt to make or alter any fireworks or explosive devices. Always have a fire extinguisher, a hose or bucket of water, nearby.

Only light one firework at a time and never attempt to re-light or fix a “dud” firework. After a firework has finished burning, douse it with plenty of water before throwing it away to prevent starting a trash fire.

They also ask that you be considerate of individuals in your area with PTSD and other types of medical conditions. The noise can cause severe stress and reaction in your neighbors. And remember that animals have sensitive ears and can be very frightened or stressed by fireworks sounds.
