Cummins reports dip in revenue, North America sales in 3rd quarter

Cummins is stressing the strength of its third quarter performance, but also reported revenues that were down 2 percent and sales in North America down by 4 percent compared to the same period last year.

The Columbus based engine manufacturer released its third quarter report this morning, with Chair and CEO Jennifer Rumsey pointing to growth in the Power Systems and Distribution segments and cost management efforts across the company.

She said there were also adjusted expectations in the pace of the adoption of hydrogen technology due to policy shifts. That is leading to weaker prospect for demand in the electrolyzer business under the Accelera Brand. The quarter results include Accelera non-cash charges of $240 million which led to a loss in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $336 million.

Overall, third quarter revenues were $8.3 billion but those were down 2 percent from the same quarter last year. Sales in North America dipped 4 percent over last year but international revenues were up 2 percent. That was reportedly due to higher demand in China and Europe.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the third quarter were $1.2 billion compared to $1.4 billion a year ago. Net income was $536 million compared to $809 million in 2024.

Rumsey said that Cummins will not be providing an outlook for revenue or profitability for the remainder of the year.
