Decatur County tornado confirmed after last week’s storms

The National Weather Service now says a third Indiana tornado has been identified in a string of storms that blew through our area last week.

The weather service yesterday confirmed that the storms that swept through between 7 and 8 the night of Thursday, Feb. 19th spawned a tornado in Decatur County, west of Greensburg. The tornado was identified by storm chaser video and is believed to have been on the ground from 8:35 to 8:37 p.m. in the evening for just under a mile. The tornado had a max width of 25 yards. The weather service is calling the tornado an EFU because of unknown wind speeds. No damage was reported.

The same storm system rolled through Monroe, Brown and Bartholomew Counties, bringing an EF-2 tornado to Bloomington. That tornado touched down on the west side of Bloomington at 6:46 p.m. and traveled 3.7 miles, with a maximum width of 440 yards and peak winds of 120 mph. It was on the ground for about 20 minutes.

The storms also brought an EF0 tornado to Indiana near Sullivan just before 6 p.m. That tornado had winds of up to 85mp and was on the ground for about four miles.

No injuries or deaths were reported in any of these tornadoes.
