Governor suspends gas taxes for 30 days

Indiana Governor Mike Braun has announced a 30-day suspension on the state’s sales tax on gas.

Senate Republicans including Sen. Greg Walker of Columbus had called on Braun to make the move to provide relief for Hoosiers as average gas prices hit $4.14 in Indiana.

Walker said affordability is the top issue for the community and he is hearing about constituents’ struggles with rising prices. He said “Thanks to years of fiscally conservative leadership at the Statehouse, I believe this is something we can afford, and I think it will provide meaningful relief for our citizens. “

Supporters say the governor has the authority to take such an emergency action if he determines there’s been a gas shortfall that justifies declaring an energy emergency.
