IU mobile lung screenings on Columbus campus next week

Area residents will have a chance to get lung cancer screenings coming up next week at IU Columbus.

According to the school, Indiana’s first and only mobile lung screening unit will be coming to the IU Columbus campus on Wednesday, Oct. 8th. The screenings are through the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, IU Health, and the End Lung Cancer Now initiative.

Organizers say that community members are encouraged to take advantage of this convenient, and potentially life-saving screening. They say that lung cancer screening is a quick, painless process that takes less than five minutes. The low-dose CT scan requires no needles, special diet, or change of clothes.

Lung cancer screenings are covered by most insurance plans if you are between 50 and 77 years old and have a 20 year habit of smoking more than one pack of cigarettes a day, or two packs a day for the past 10 years.

Lung cancer claims more lives each year than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. But when caught early t lung cancer is highly curable.

The mobile unit will be at 4601 Central Avenue, in front of the Columbus Learning Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 8th.
