Life sentence sought for Seymour man in murder case

Prosecutors in Dearborn County are seeking a life sentence for a Seymour man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend this summer.

Authorities are accusing 33-year-old Brent Wellman of fatally shooting 39-year-old Dennis Adams Jr in August. Wellman has been charged with Murder, Resisting Law Enforcement as well as a Felony Firearm Enhancement. Prosecutors announced yesterday that they would be seeking life in prison without parole in the case.

The incident began at the home of the former girlfriend in North Vernon. Adams spent the night at her home, police say and overnight they heard a loud noise as if someone was breaking in but couldn’t find anything wrong at the home. Adams left to go to work early the next morning. Shortly afterwards, Dearborn County dispatchers received a report that a vehicle had stopped on the highway in front of a home and shots had been fired. A witness saw a man behind the wheel covered in blood and a second man climbing out of the back seat and into the driver’s seat.

After a chase and crash, Wellman ran from the scene and Adams body was found off the road near the tree-line. Wellman was later found wearing in a nearby creek wearing only his underwear.

Wellman is being held without bond in the Dearborn County Jail.
