New Columbus vehicle rules go into effect June 1st

Columbus Police are clarifying some of the details of a new ordinance allowing some off-road designed vehicles to be used on city streets that goes into effect June 1st.

The Columbus City Council gave its final approval this week to the new rules.

The law only allows larger golf carts and utility task vehicles. Those are larger versions of more traditional ATVs.

The safety requirements include seat belts, a rearview mirror, horn, functioning brakes, taillights, brake lights, headlights, turn signals as well as rear reflectors and a slow moving vehicle emblem on the back. Anyone onboard must remain seated.

The new law does not allow dirt bikes, ATVs, go-karts, snowmobiles or other off-road vehicles on city streets. You can not take the vehicles onto sidewalks or the People Trail.

Drivers must be more than 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license and the vehicle must have insurance.

The vehicles can only be used on streets with a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less and are not allowed on any city streets that are also designated as state highways.
