Officer honored for saving choking baby

A Columbus police officer is being recognized for his efforts to save the life of a baby.

According to the Columbus Police Department, Sgt. Brandon Decker received a letter of commendation for the incident on Sept. 26th. Decker was called to an apartment on Salzburg Drive in Columbus after a report of an unresponsive baby. Police say that when he arrived the baby was not breathing and was lethargic. Decker worked to clear any obstructions to the baby’s airway. After his initial efforts were unsuccessful he tried several back blows and the baby finally began to breath and cry.

Medics arrived on the scene and took over the care of the infant.

On Thursday, the baby and the family of the child met with Decker to thank him for his actions and Police Chief Steve Norman presented the letter of commendation. Norman said he was proud to have Decker on the force and of the ” work he’s doing to help our community.”
