Portable translation devices added to sheriff’s department

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department has purchased portable translation devices that will allow deputies and jail staff to communicate in dozens of languages in real time.

According to the sheriff’s department, the department has acquired five of the devices which can communicate in 92 different languages. The goal is to reduce language barriers and they are expected to be useful in situations including emergency responses, routine interactions and community engagement efforts.

Sheriff Chris Lane said that the devices will help ensure “that language differences do not stand in the way of safety or access to services.” He said the department’s goal is to serve every member of the community with professionalism, respect and understanding.
