Probation revoked in convenience store robbery case

A Columbus man convicted of robbing a convenience store is heading to prison after violating the terms of his probation.

According to the Bartholomew County prosecutor’s office, an investigation began in August of last year after a robbery at the Circle K store on County Road 450S. A white man wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun demanded the clerk turn over money from the register. That investigation and tips from the public led to the arrest of Marc Mathis in September of 2024.

In July, Mathis was convicted and sentenced to a nine year suspended sentence, four years of probation and a six months in the Bartholomew County Work Release Program. However authorities discovered that he had used fentanyl while in the facility and in August Prosecutor Lindsey Holden-Kay filed a petition to revoke his probation.

At a hearing last week, Judge Kelly Benjamin ordered Mathis to serve the nine years in the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Holden-Kay released a statement this week, saying that the incident was a serious and violent offense that warrant accountability and that his immediate violation of probation confirmed those concerns. She said the prison sentence is “appropriate, and serves the interests of justice and community safety.”
