Traffic surveillance cameras lead to stolen vehicle recovery, arrest

A western Indiana man was arrested in Columbus Tuesday after a stolen vehicle was spotted on the county’s traffic surveillance camera system.

According to the Columbus Police Department, the FLOCK camera system recognized a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Greencastle on Monday and alerted authorities. A FLOCK system use strategically placed cameras to automatically read license plates and quickly process those against a database to alert police with various pieces of information.

Officers found the vehicle at around 4 p.m. and attempted to stop it near Williamsburg Way and Taylor Road. But instead of stopping, the driver took off with the chase leading police onto 25th Street and Marr Road. That’s where the driver lost control and crashed into a field near Sawin Drive. After getting the vehicle stuck in the field, the driver and two passengers were soon taken into custody.

18-year-old Dylan Peach of Coatesville was arrested on preliminary charges of theft of a motor vehicle, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle and operating a vehicle without obtaining a license.

The two passengers were identified as juveniles and were released to their parents.
