United Way warns of need for food assistance as benefits stop

Local agencies and non profit groups are scrambling to help families that will be affected when SNAP benefits are suspended Nov. 1st.

According to the United Way of Bartholomew County, more than 5,300 Bartholomew County residents rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and are expected to go without benefits as the government shutdown continues. The United Way is working with local service organizations to respond to those residents’ needs.

Anyone needing additional food help during the benefits suspension can contact local food pantries including Love Chapel, Community Center of Hope and the Salvation Army. If you want to help those in need, you are encouraged to donate to those organizations as they are equipped to help families in need and can often provide meals at a lower cost than direct food donations.
