Update: One dies after German Township home fire Sunday

One person has died after a home fire in northwestern Bartholomew County Sunday afternoon.

According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, 54-year-old Mark Streeval of Taylorsville was found by firefighters inside a burning home in the 1800 block of West County Road 650N Sunday afternoon. Although he was initially found to have no pulse, after being rescued and receiving medical attention, a pulse was regained.

Streeval was first taken to Columbus Regional Health by CRH medica and then flown to Eskenazi Hospital by Lifeline helicopter. He died at the hospital.

Deputies arrived at the scene of the fire at just before 3 p.m. Sunday and found a large amount of smoke coming from inside the home. Deputies and an Edinburgh police officer entered the home to look for victims, but were forced to retreat by the smoke.

Firefighters from German Township, Columbus Township and the Edinburgh Fire Department began battling the fire and were able to find Streeval inside. He had to be rescued from a window from the back bedroom of the home.

Firefighters said a second person at the scene was taken to the hospital by private vehicle.

A joint investigation is ongoing by the Bartholomew County fire inspector and Department of Homeland Security fire inspector into the cause of the fire. The cause and manner of Streeval’s death are also under investigation by deputies.

Also assisting at the scene were Clifford, Hope, Harrison Township and Clay Township volunteer fire departments.
