Area students taking part in Luger Symposium at UIndy

A group of students from our area will be joining others from across the state Saturday at the University of Indianapolis for the 49th annual Richard G. Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders.

175 students will be taking part statewide from 60 high schools, with 26 from area counties including 4 from Columbus North High School, two from Brown County, three from Seymour High School, 10 from Shelby County and 8 from Johnson County.

The event on Saturday will feature discussions on public issues and world events including breakout sessions on the state of Indiana politics in 2026, the history of disability and welfare in Indiana, the evolution of power politics at the national level, and refugee integration in Indianapolis.

The keynote speaker will be Steve Inskeep, host of National Public Radio’s Morning Edition as well as an author.

By taking part the students are eligible to apply for the $5,000 Lugar Symposium Scholarship.

In addition to being a long-serving Indiana Senator and Indianapolis mayor, Lugar was a distinguished trustee and former political science professor at the University of Indianapolis.
