Authorities warn of scammers faking calls from deputies

Area law enforcement are warning of scammers pretending to be law enforcement officers trying to get you to pay fake fines or other non existent fees.

According to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, there have been reports of callers claiming to be with the sheriff’s department demanding you make an immediate payment to avoid going to jail. They could claim that you have an active warrant for missing jury duty, citations traffic construction zone laws, or other legal matters.

The sheriff’s department stresses that they will not call you demanding you make a payment to avoid arrest. Legitimate law enforcement will also not demand payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or payment apps. They also will not threaten arrest if you don’t make an immediate payment over the phone.

They suggest that if you receive a call that you do not provide any personal or financial information over the phone, or make any payments. Instead, you should contact your local law enforcement directly through a legitimate phone number.
