Bartholomew officials survey damage from storms looking for tornado

Bartholomew County emergency officials documented storm damage that could indicate a tornado touched down briefly north of Columbus Sunday night, but are waiting for confirmation from National Weather Service survey teams.

According to Bartholomew County Emergency Management, officials assessed damage in an area where radar indicated significant debris from the Sunday evening storm. The area north of Columbus is near County Roads 450N and 110W.

Some residents reported a funnel cloud in the area Sunday night.

The survey found several trees that were knocked down or uprooted, flattening of corn in fields, broken tree limbs and the topping of other trees. A nearby home on County Road 110W did not show any damage, but a nearby barn had areas missing from its metal roof.

The assessment concluded that the damage was sporadic and mostly limited to trees and agriculture.

The information and photos has been forwarded to the National Weather Service. The agency has already identified at least 11 sites were tornadoes touched down Sunday night In Indiana, with the strongest an EF2 that hit Fort Branch in the southwestern corner of the state, damaging a home and ripping the roof off of a church.
