Black History Month Columbus releases schedule, magazine plans

In celebration of 100 years of Black History Month, the Columbus and Bartholomew County community will be holding a slate of events and producing a collectible magazine.

According to Black History Month Columbus, the February community calendar is available online and includes many community celebrations, creative events and activities, discussions and family- and youth-oriented programs.

Black History Month Columbus was created four years ago and includes a coalition of local organizations and community leaders including the African American Foundation, Paths to Success, NAACP Columbus/Bartholomew County branch, Taylor Bros., and the African American Pastors Alliance.

Founder and Project Manager Whitney Wood-Gaines says that “Black History Month was created because our stories were ignored and undervalued. One hundred years later, its purpose still matters.” She said the celebration is “rooted in Community, Culture, and Collaboration” and the entire community is invited to be part of it.

Black History Month Columbus will be producing a commemorative magazine that will feature history, the community calendar, and stories featuring community leaders.
