Garage fire leads to exploding ammo in Hope

Rescue workers in Hope saved two dogs yesterday from a fire in a garage that contained ammunition exploding from the heat.

According to the Hope Volunteer Fire Department, a structure fire was reported in the 7600 block of North County Road 1000E Tuesday. Hope Police were the first on the scene and quickly rescued two dogs from the garage and the animals were uninjured.

When firefighters arrived the building was showing heavy flames. And firefighters discovered that a large amount of ammunition was stored inside. The ammo began exploding from the heat of the fire, with one round striking a fire truck, close to the pump operator.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and no one was injured.

The structure was a total loss.

Also assisting at the scene were volunteer firefighters from Clifford, Clay Township, Hartsville, Burney, Columbus Township, Letts as well as the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department.
