Chances increase for bitter cold, snow over the weekend

A winter storm watch will be going into effect for our area, with the possibility of bitter cold, heavy snow and difficult travel this weekend.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a winter storm watch that goes into effect Saturday morning and lasts through Sunday evening. Forecasters are warning of the possibility of four to seven inches of snow across central Indiana. The weather service says there is an 80 percent chance of two or inches of snow, but still a 60 percent chance of six inches or more.

The weather service warns that travel could become difficult and you should consider delaying any trips if you can. You should use extreme caution if you have to be out on the road. They also suggest putting together a winter storm kit for your vehicle including tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing.

The winter storm watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday evening. A cold weather advisory is in effect from late tonight through Friday morning.

The weather service says a polar vortex is expected to bring brutally cold temperatures to two-thirds of the country by Sunday. Temperatures are dropping below zero in some areas, and strong, gusty winds are creating life-threatening wind chills. Extreme cold warnings and watches are in effect across the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest.
