Columbus firefighters battle three home blazes Sunday-Monday

Columbus firefighters battled three home fires Sunday night into Monday afternoon, including one struck by lightning during Sunday night’s storms.

According to the Columbus Fire Department, the first fire was at 7:40 p.m. Sunday in the 4400 block of Ashworth Court, when a neighbor reported a garage fire. Firefighters found smoke coming from an attached garage and after ensuring the fire had not spread into he home, had the fire extinguished within 10 minutes of the 911 call. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

At about 10:25 p.m. Sunday night, firefighters were called to the 1600 block of Canyon Oak Lane after a resident reported a lightning strike to the home. Firefighter found heavy fire within the home’s attic. They removed the second floor ceiling and put the fire out but the home’s roof truss system was heavily damaged and the home is uninhabitable.

The third fire was Monday afternoon at about 12:14 p.m. when a neighbor reported smoke coming from a mobile home in the 2600 block of Doup Drive. Firefighters found heavy smoke inside and discovered a fire in the bedroom. The fire was knocked out within minutes but two cats died in the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The American Red Cross has been contacted to help house the homeowner.
