Columbus makes change to Whitfield Drive traffic light

You will see a new version of a traffic signal if you are driving on the east side of Columbus near Walmart.

The City of Columbus Engineering Department, says the intersection of 10th Street and Whitfield Drive now was a traffic light for those making left turns that gives four options for drivers including an option for “protected permissive left turns”.

The light includes the familiar solid red lighted arrow, meaning you can not turn left, a solid yellow lighted arrow, meaning you should slow down and can turn left if it is safe to do so, and a steady green arrow meaning left turns are allowed. But it also includes a new fourth option with a flashing yellow turn signal. When you see the flashing yellow, you may turn left, but you must first yield to any pedestrians or oncoming traffic.

The city says the light change is meant to reduce delays, while maintaining safety for all users of the road.
