Columbus moves forward with Deaver Road annexation

The city of Columbus is adding just over 139 acres at Deaver Road and County Road 150W for a new housing subdivision under an annexation and rezoning approved last week by Columbus City Council.

According to documents filed with the city, Arbor Homes submitted the application to annex and rezone the property. The planned Timberland Springs subdivision would take up 107 acres of the property and consist of single-family homes. The builder asked for the property to be rezoned to Residential-Two Family from the existing agricultural zoning as a way to allow for slightly denser development. However no multi-family units are being planned.

The location is just north of the former Walesboro airport and near Jonesville Road.

The city plan commission recommended approval for the project and City Council gave its first approval to the changes in March.

Last week, the council passed the annexation on second and final reading along with the rezoning and a fiscal plan that showed no immediate impact for the city.
