Columbus police receive accreditation for fourth time

The Columbus Police Department has been accredited again by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies also known as CALEA.

According to the department, this is the fourth certification for the department which has been an accredited agency since 2014. The recognition is seen as the gold standard for law enforcement professionalism and adherence to best practices and standards for police agencies.

Officials say that every year, the department must submit documentation of the policies and procedures for the department. Every fourth year, an assessor comes on site to conduct interviews and review. The CALEA commissioners then consider final approval.

This year’s final approval was recognized with a ceremony on Saturday.

Only about 5% of law enforcement agencies in the U.S. are accredited.

Deputy Chief Matt Martindale said he was proud of the work and believes the officers and staff demonstrate the highest level of professionalism.
