CRH reaches milestone with AFib prevention treatment

Columbus Regional Health is announcing a milestone with its cardiovascular team recently completed its 100th Watchman procedure, which treats patients with atrial fibrillation, or AFib

According to the hospital, CRH began offering the Watchman procedure in 2022. The team is led by cardiologist and electrophysiologist Dr. Albert Sey.

The Watchman, which fits into the heart’s left atrial appendage , is a small, parachute-shaped device. It is made of a titanium frame with a polyester fabric cover and is implanted through the skin. The device is permanent and never needs to be replaced.

Afib causes blood to pool in the heart’s left atrial appendage, and cause blood clots to form, which can then move into the blood stream, possibly causing a stroke.

The hospital says that for those who have AFib not caused by a heart valve problem, the device offers an alternative to blood thinners.
