Driver rescued from water at Mill Race Park

Columbus police and firefighters rescued a driver after a vehicle went into a pond at Mill Race Park Monday.

According to the Columbus Police Department, rescue workers were called to an accident near Carl Miske Drive and Indianapolis Road at 9:18 a.m. Monday morning to find a vehicle had gone into the water. When police and firefighters arrived the vehicle was partially submerged and the river was trapped inside.

Police Officer Jacob Driver and Firefighter Seth Burton entered the water and secured ropes to the vehicle, and the rescue workers pulled the vehicle toward the shore. After they broke out the window, the driver was pulled from the vehicle and taken to nearby medics.

Authorities say that the 31-year-old driver appears to have suffered a medical incident leading to the crash. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police Chief Steve Norman praised the efforts of the first responders saying that they “came together to act quickly and save a life, the most important thing we can do in public safety”

Also assisting at the scene were Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department deputies, Columbus Regional Hospital medics and Columbus Township Fire and Rescue Department.
